Product Description
The AS-440-1ZI features an internal nut element that "floats" within a stationary outer retainer. This design provides a total of 0.030 in (0.76 mm) adjustment (0.015 in in any direction from the center) to account for minor inaccuracies in hole placement between mating parts.
Constructed from heat-treated carbon steel, the fastener is permanently installed by being pressed into a properly sized round hole in the host sheet. During installation, the sheet material cold-flows into an undercut, locking the retainer securely and leaving the reverse side of the panel flush. The "ZI" finish provides zinc plating with a clear trivalent chromate for RoHS-compliant corrosion protection. The shank code "1" indicates it is designed for installation in sheets with a minimum thickness of 0.038 in (0.97 mm).
Misalignment Compensation: The 0.030" total float reduces labor time and assembly rejects by allowing the nut to move to meet the mating screw.
Captive Hardware: The nut remains trapped within the retainer after installation, preventing loose parts from falling into sensitive electrical or mechanical systems.
