Product Description
The AS-832-1ZI features a two-piece captive design consisting of a threaded nut element housed within a stationary outer retainer. This configuration allows the internal nut to "float" a total of 0.030 in (0.76 mm)—moving 0.015 in in any direction from the center. This float is essential for simplifying the assembly of large panels or complex components where precise hole alignment between multiple parts is difficult to achieve.
Constructed from heat-treated carbon steel, the fastener is permanently installed by being pressed into a properly sized round hole. During the installation process, the host metal cold-flows into an undercut in the retainer, locking it securely into the panel. The "ZI" finish specifies a zinc plating with a clear trivalent chromate for RoHS-compliant corrosion protection. The shank code "1" indicates it is designed for installation in sheets with a minimum thickness of 0.038 in (0.97 mm).
Misalignment Compensation: The 0.030" total float reduces assembly time and labor costs by allowing the nut to shift and meet the mating screw.
Captive Hardware: The floating nut is held securely within the retainer after installation, preventing loose hardware from falling into sensitive electrical or mechanical systems.
High Performance: Provides exceptional torque-out and pushout resistance compared to standard tapped holes or extruded sheets.
Flush Profile: The reverse side of the panel remains flush after installation, maintaining clean exterior aesthetics and supporting close-fitting mating parts.
