A4-440-1 - Floating Self-Clinching Nut by PennEngineering ® (PEM ® )

The PEM® A4-440-1 is a high-strength Floating Self-Clinching Nut specifically designed for installation into stainless steel sheets. As part of the A4™ Series, this fastener provides a permanent, load-bearing thread in thin panels where tapping is not practical.

The defining feature of this component is its internal "floating" nut element, which is held captive within a stationary retainer. This allows for a total float of 0.76 mm (.030 in), providing lateral adjustment to compensate for mating hole misalignment. This capability is critical in complex assemblies where tolerance build-up or minor inaccuracies in hole positioning can prevent standard fixed fasteners from aligning with mating screws.

Stainless Steel Optimization: Engineered to clinch securely into stainless steel panels, providing high push-out and torque-out resistance that standard carbon steel clinching nuts cannot achieve in harder materials.

Misalignment Correction: The 0.38 mm (.015 in) radial float from center allows for easier assembly of mating components, reducing the need for precise hole-to-hole tolerances.

Corrosion Resistance: The combination of 300 and 400 series stainless steel with a passivated finish ensures long-term performance in harsh or sterile environments.
